Justen and his partner Nathan welcomed twin boys by surrogacy in July 2018 in the USA. The boys are half brothers given one has Justen’s and one has Nathan’s genetic material! Their journey started in 2016 and finished in 2018. In Apr 2019, they adopted their sons in line with the current legal framework in New Zealand with the help of lawyer Stewart Dalley. Their’s is the first case where the parent held a NZ work visa and yet was able to adopt their surrogacy-born children.
Surrogacy can fall into the categories of altruistic or commercial. Altruistic surrogacy means that the surrogate derives no financial benefit from being a surrogate with the exception of having her reasonable expenses of the surrogacy paid.
